The Importance of UL and ETL Certifications for Surge Protectors

In our modern world, we rely heavily on electronic devices for work, entertainment, and communication. These devices are vulnerable to voltage surges caused by lightning strikes, power outages, or other electrical disturbances. Surge protectors play a crucial role in safeguarding our valuable electronics against these damaging power fluctuations. However, not all surge protectors are created equal. One vital aspect to consider when purchasing a surge protector is safety certification. When it comes to certifying electrical products for safety and quality, two well-known safety agencies are UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories). Both certifications ensure product safety and quality.

UL Certification

UL Certification is provided by Underwriters Laboratories, a globally recognized independent safety science company. Established in 1894, UL develops safety standards and conducts rigorous testing to evaluate various products for potential hazards, electrical performance, and reliability. UL certification ensures that a product meets the necessary safety standards and signifies that it has undergone comprehensive testing and evaluation.

ETL Certification

ETL Certification is offered by Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider. Electrical Testing Laboratories (ETL), formerly known as Edison Testing Laboratories (as in Thomas Edison), is a division that conducts testing, inspection, and certification of electrical products to ensure their compliance with applicable safety standards. Its expertise is backed by 125 years of product testing. ETL certification confirms that a product meets the necessary safety requirements and has been tested by an independent third-party laboratory.

Working together
Safety Standards

Both UL and ETL certifications aim to ensure that products meet specific safety standards in the U.S. and Canada. These certifications require rigorous testing of electrical products to evaluate their performance, durability, and resistance to potential hazards. Whether a product carries a UL or ETL mark, it indicates that it has been tested and evaluated for safety by reputable organizations. The specific certifications required for power in the U.S. are UL-1449, UL-498A, and UL-1363. The specific certifications required for power in Canada are CSA C22.2 no.308, C22.2 no.42, C22.2 no.269.3.

Independent Third-Party Testing

UL and ETL certifications involve independent third-party testing. In both cases, the testing is conducted by certified laboratories that are not affiliated with the manufacturer or the seller of the product. This independent testing provides an unbiased evaluation of the product's safety and quality, instilling confidence in consumers.

Continuous Monitoring and Compliance

UL and ETL certifications do not stop at a one-time evaluation. These certifications require ongoing monitoring and compliance to ensure that certified products maintain their safety standards. Manufacturers are subject to periodic inspections and audits to ensure continued compliance, which helps ensure the materials, manufacturing, and design processes will result in a safe product.

Widely Accepted and Recognized

Both UL and ETL certifications are widely accepted and recognized in the industry. Many consumers, businesses, and regulatory bodies consider products with UL or ETL certification marks as meeting the necessary safety standards. These certifications have a long history and established reputation, making them trusted symbols of product safety.

ETL utilizes UL certification standards. UL's rigorous testing procedures and ongoing surveillance help ETL identify potential hazards, mitigate risks, and continuously improve their processes. UL certification also enhances ETL's reputation and instills confidence in their clients, assuring them that the products and services they receive meet the highest industry standards for safety and quality.

As with the Austere Product Line, the majority of the surge protective products in the North American market are certified to UL and CSA standards and carry the ETL Mark from Intertek.  In addition to ETL, other reputable agencies include UL, CSA and TUV. Here are the logos of the following safety marks:
